Town and country planning is a discipline that covers a wide range of topics. It is concerned with many aspects of development, community and land. Some of the
key issues facing planning in Fiji are as follow:
- Implications of three different systems of land tenure;
- Need for a viable agricultural sector to provide
food and for regional development;
- Urbanisation and expanding cities and towns;
- High demand for development in coastal areas;
- Managing development in remote areas
and islands; and
- Managing impacts of development on the environment.
In developing Town Planning Schemes and other legislation, and in making decisions about
applications for Development, planning involves balancing different interests and considering the impact of proposals on the public interest and long-term future.
